Summer is upon us, and if you are like most people, you are probably taking advantage of the longer days and extra warmth to get out and soak up the sun. While summer is a great time to relax and kick back, it can also wreak havoc on your skin, hair and body. But don’t worry, we have some great tips to help you protect yourself while having fun.

1. Switch to a self-tanner.

The sun’s rays can be incredibly damaging. Not only can they burn your skin and lead to premature aging, but prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun can lead to skin cancer. This summer, instead of laying out for hours at the pool perfecting your tan, try switching to a self-tanner to get that sun-kissed glow.

2. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen.

One of the most important things you can do to protect your skin this summer in use a good sunscreen. We recommend a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Make sure the sunscreen you choose blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen everyday, and every 2 hours if you are in the sun for a prolonged period of time, or if you are sweating or swimming. Be sure to still wear sunscreen even when it’s cloudy, because the sun’s rays can still cause damage, even when you can’t see them.

Some great sun safety products we love are Elta MD Clear, Revision Intellishade, and Epionce Daily Shield Tinted SPF 50. All of these products are available at our office!

3. Don’t forget the lips!

Although most of us don’t choose to lather sunscreen onto our lips, many lip balms have an SPF agent. Check for lip balms with an SPF of 30 or higher, and use it every day, even when you’re wearing lipstick on top.

4. Moisturize.

If you find that your skin is becoming dry, especially around the elbows, feet and ankles, use Avene Trixera Emollient Cream for your body and Epionce Intensive Nourishing Cream for your face! These products are great for restoring moisture and hydration to your skin if the summer months have drained your skin.

5. Exfoliate.

Exfoliating the dead skin and toxins from your skin is a great way to bring back that fresh face that we all love in the summer. Using an enzyme mask like the Revisions Orange mask at home, or getting a microdermabrasion facial from Stones River Dermatology are great ways to exfoliate safely!

6. Hydrate.

Beautiful skin starts from the inside, so be sure to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. A good rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in ounces every day. (So if you weigh 100 pounds, you would drink 50 ounces of water each day.)
